The hiatus from blogging must continue, sort of, as I must be writing my dissertation.
Wore a pair of microscopic shorts in the house yesterday to combat London’s September heat (!). On returning home, A informed me that they left nothing to the imagination. A compliment or not? Not, I think.

I have had enough of besura and unprepared children belting out Carnatic music on youtube. Adoring parents, please note, they are not “prodigies,” whatever your shruti challenged ears might believe.

Every instrument is lugged along to accompany various singing hopefuls on TV contests, mridangam and tablas, veena and harmonium, but the Tanpura, which should be the backbone of this orchestra, remains too “heavy” to transport. The electronic box is enough for all.

I am really glad to be back to my own space, my own study, my own bathroom, my own kitchen, my own bedroom and my husband. Now to somehow shift of all these to India.

Don’t have time. But I want to say: Yay! And also:

1) Gay sex has not been legalised it has been decriminalised.

2) Some religious outfits are saying they do not oppose decriminalisation but have a moral problem with homosexuality. This is actually a positive sign, an opening for engagement and a debate about what is “natural” and “normal” and what is not, but the media’s effort to polarise the discussion in it’s ever hysterical voice does not help. Hair nearly fell out watching NDTV yesterday.

3) There are people who are gay and Muslim, gay and Hindu etc-why are they not being interviewed? Why is it only the religious leaders, i.e. geriatric men being asked for quotes?

4) This is a democracy, and a secular one at that. There’s space for all of us, Catholics, Muslims, Hindus, atheists etc because of that. And there isn’t one version of “Indian culture.” You old men on TV, remember that.

5) Many congratulations to the tireless Naz Foundation and all its supporters.

6) Sometimes judgments are a pain to read. This one is a treat. Couldn’t stop smiling with pride.

7)Same-Sex Love in India: Readings from Literature and History is an excellent book to read/re-read at this point and to recommend to all the “this is not Indian culture” advocates.

There has been a huge row in the UK over the BBC and Sky’s decision not to screen a joint appeal by various charities such as Oxfam, Save the Children etc for donations for Gaza. The BBC said it had to remain “impartial” and therefore could not screen the appeal. For the charities, this is a humanitarian appeal, and not about taking sides. Gaza is wrecked. Anyway, even if one agrees with the BBC’s argument, one can still donate to the charities. I don’t like the way most appeals are filmed, and I don’t like this one either, but Gaza needs help. Here is the Disasters Emergency Committee Appeal. Please give, if you can.

I tried to watch Gary Rhodes in India, showing on UKTV Food. I gave up. Then I tried again. Today I forced myself to sit through the episode on street food.

The man is infuriating. Also patronising. Rhodes, who knows NOTHING about Indian food (as he makes obvious), is always telling the chefs who are teaching him how to cook it what to do. He always questions their use of ingredients, constantly complaining about the amount of salt/sugar/ghee/ginger/garlic/chilli/ground spices/coriander they advise him to use.

No research. Comes up with silly remarks and questions and one doesn’t get a flavour of the depth and breadth of Indian cuisine at all.

Apparently he came up with a “banquet” in the West End at the end of the series, for which he could not come up with a suitable Indian dessert so made bread and butter pudding. Yes, Indian sweets can be too sweet, but there are many that aren’t or needn’t be too sweet.

On logging on to the UKTV food message boards I was comforted to note that British viewers took a dim view of the show too,
