When Rupert Dickinson, the chief executive of one of Britain’s biggest property firms, left his BlackBerry behind in London while on a business trip to Ireland, he simply ordered one of his staff to get on a plane and deliver the device to him.

For Dickinson’s then head of sustainability, Tim Nicholson, the errand was much more than an executive indulgence: it embodied the contempt with which his boss treated his deep philosophical beliefs about climate change.

In a significant decisiontoday , a judge found Nicholson’s views on the environment were so deeply held that they were entitled to the same protection as religious convictions, and ruled that an employment tribunal should hear his claim that he was sacked because of his beliefs.

The judgment could open the door for people to take their employers to tribunals over their stance on a range of issues, from animal rights to feminism.

Kaya Eldridge, a graduate of the London School of Economics, has made a formal complaint to the Chief Justice of the Gujarat High Court after a defence lawyer asked her a series of “irrelevant questions designed to question my character”. In front of a packed court of jeering men, the 23-year-old was asked whether she drank alcohol, socialised with men and even how often she took a shower. All the while, the man she had accused of assaulting her sat just feet away.

Don’t have time. But I want to say: Yay! And also:

1) Gay sex has not been legalised it has been decriminalised.

2) Some religious outfits are saying they do not oppose decriminalisation but have a moral problem with homosexuality. This is actually a positive sign, an opening for engagement and a debate about what is “natural” and “normal” and what is not, but the media’s effort to polarise the discussion in it’s ever hysterical voice does not help. Hair nearly fell out watching NDTV yesterday.

3) There are people who are gay and Muslim, gay and Hindu etc-why are they not being interviewed? Why is it only the religious leaders, i.e. geriatric men being asked for quotes?

4) This is a democracy, and a secular one at that. There’s space for all of us, Catholics, Muslims, Hindus, atheists etc because of that. And there isn’t one version of “Indian culture.” You old men on TV, remember that.

5) Many congratulations to the tireless Naz Foundation and all its supporters.

6) Sometimes judgments are a pain to read. This one is a treat. Couldn’t stop smiling with pride.

7)Same-Sex Love in India: Readings from Literature and History is an excellent book to read/re-read at this point and to recommend to all the “this is not Indian culture” advocates.
France: Sikhs challenge turban ban before UN body

Indo-Asian News Service
16 Dec 2008

United Sikhs, an Sikh advocacy group, has challenged the French government’s ban on the wearing of turbans before the UN Human Rights Commission (UNHRC), arguing that this was suppressing their freedom of religion and depriving the community of its basic human rights.
link

There is apparently another challenge going on in the European Court, but not using religion as the basis for the challenge.
