Time to breathe and Autorickshaw
2011 July 11
Shyam and Varali have given me a gentle poke to write a post. It’s been very hard to post (or tweet!) as my brain feels full-I’ve had a lot of guests in and out for the past month. My father has been here for a while and I am trying to help him sort some of his work. My study has had friends and cousins in it. My routine has gone a bit awry. I hope I will resume posting soon. In the meantime I came across this Canadian group, Autorickshaw, that combines Carnatic music, tabla, bass guitar, dilruba etc. Not sure what I feel about it yet.
I really like the Dilruba in this one. The bass is also lovely.

I am sure What I feel about it . The ‘autorickshaw’ tag is indicative of the of the crass treatment to one of C-Musics jewel’s . The association of Trichy Sankaran notwithstanding
.
Poor Guy . I dont understand why he has to play for such pieces . For someone who seen these compositions in glorious hands . At close quarters too.
But then this chicanery of laya artists converting Musical masterpieces to rythmic razzmataz , started long long ago . One can only weep tears of blood .
If it only can help tilt the balance , here are two renderings, which may never make it to the youtube . See how for yourself , how a Voleti can roll the word “Gana” in his vocal chords with so many embellishments.
or
How Lalgudi Jayaraman prompts the singer in the other track to sing -Navaneetha Chora .
And In case you are wondering if I am laya disabled , just how see another master plays for the song here . The Mridangam sings the song , along .In both tracks.
Some Autorickshaw this. In Fairy Land

Kji I agree with you on the rhythmic razmatazz bit. On autorickshaws being crass, I don’t.
Thanks for the link.
It is a rare piece of fusion that appeals to me. I got to about 1:19 before I had to give up.
Anyway.
We’ll wait for a full-fledged post as long there is promise of its arrival.
Varali, its the Dilruba and bass in the second one I like best, I think.
I Only said it was a crass treatment meted out to one of carnatic music’s jewels . And By that I meant the Composition Ganamurthe .
And a treatment by , surprisingly , the daughter of a Maestro who has been just crowned a Sangeetha Kalanidhi by the Music Academy .
Her Dad could have composed a song for occasion that went – Thalamurthe …
as for your liking the Autorickshaw , I never intended to make my views known about it .
In future I know it is better to shut up , whenever such things come up
No, no don’t ever shut up-the world would be a poorer place. Not really sure about the Gaanamurthe-its ok. Really liked the Dilruba and the bass best in the second video.
As for autorickshaws-I like them in certain circumstances only
Happy Birthday, U! Hope you’re having an awesome day!
