Malavika Sarukkai, a Bharatanatyam dancer. This is an old video of her. Love the clean lines. Something else about her I have always liked is her choice of costume.
Thanks to Nick/Tripmonk for these videos
She is gorgeous, too, and so graceful.
However, I feel that lately, her dancing is missing that spark, and is a bit too tragic and somber. Just my opinion.
Watched her at Madras in December. And for once, Bharatanatyam took me far and away. Normally, things are disjointed enough that the picture does not come together – one is aware of the technique or the costumes or the light, it’s all in pieces. This one performance was so perfect – lovely costumes, lighting was phenomenal and her movement was just so perfect.
Understood what people try to achieve in Bharatanatyam at long last!

Haven’t seen anything recently-maybe it’s something going on inside her that’s making her somber?

Sangi, I know what you mean, it can offer appear disjointed. I don’t know the new dancers (disadvantage of living in London)…
Uttara: You have the answer spot on. Her dancing is still lovely, but it is suffused with sadness – again this is just what I felt.
