Music Basti for children living in shelters in Delhi
Shubha Mudgal on Music Basti:
When I first heard about Music Basti, I thought it was a great name for a music class or institution. It is, in fact, the name of a unique two-year-old project that attempts to provide music education, and an exposure to music and the arts to children living in three shelters in the Okhla, Qutub and Kashmere Gate areas of Delhi. In doing so, Music Basti addresses children who have faced homelessness, abject penury, and trying circumstances of a nature that many of us with privileged backgrounds could never hope to comprehend. But by garnering support from musicians and young volunteers, Music Basti is able to bring to the children it works with the opportunity to engage with music and the arts…(more here-can you help them?)

Nice bit of news.
Two of my friends in Bangalore run a school ” Swarohan” for village kids at their home- on Sarajapur road. One is a Carnatic singer and the other, Hindusthani. Both of them fit their classes early in the morning since they are busy IT professionals.
Kids walk from villages as far 3-4 kms away , to attend classes , as early as 5 AM.
I got goosebumps when I went to visit them to hand over some music for their archives.
They are a shy bunch and accept very small sums for Life membership. Please write to them at swarohan@gmail.com for more.
U , you can even give a lecture the next time you come visiting . Or recommend names in Bangalore who can help enrich those kids.
Thanks for telling me about them Coolji (Thimma?) I will get in touch. They sound wonderful
