Specs, music season, loos, weight, snow
A has a new pair of specs. They’re different from all his previous pairs and I can’t stop staring at him. He’s looking differently handsome. The other night I woke up and stared at him (though he had his specs off). He woke up and found me staring. Last night he told me not to do that again, as it scared him. What to do? He should appreciate his wife staring at him out of appreciation, no?

Have been reflecting on the few concerts of the Chennai music season that I attended. I surprised myself by enjoying concerts by Nithyashree (with whose music I have an erratic relationship) and Unnikrishnan. My favourite, Sanjay Subrahmanyan, looked a bit ill and had a cough. I enjoyed the concerts, but maybe he should cut down on the number of concerts he takes on during the season-he had one almost every second day while I was there.
Went for my first Soumya live concert and was a bit disappointed. She is very good, but doesn’t seem to let herself go enough and becomes a bit monotonous.
Acoustics in some sabhas are pathetic. And what is it with artistes demanding higher volumes and screaming into the mikes?
Still had the bug with me during the season and, er, needed to use the loo at one concert when everything seemed to be leaving my body. One ladies toilet, in an unsheltered area and pouring rain…the things one does for music! I stood hopping up and down in the rain, waiting for the ancient maami who had gone in to come out. Not that I didn’t keep people waiting myself…
Was chastised more than once for not speaking Tamil while in Chennai. An auto driver thought that was enough reason to throw a fit at me and my aunt. What is a poor visitor to do?
Give me Bombay autos and cabs over those of Delhi, Bangalore and Chennai any day. That is the one thing I will remain parochial about.

Back in London got on the weighing scale, and noted the lost weight with horror. The irony is I hadn’t lost it when all those comments about my weight were made. Had a little crying fit on A’s shoulder. He, meanwhile, is cooking up these huge delicious meals for me. Thank god for him.

The snow is very pretty and all, but have had enough. Don’t want to slip and slide my way to the personal trainer next week. Yes, I am going to start working out!

LOL@ the specs incident!
Been reading about the snow.. brrr. Keep warm and take care.
The pipes in the road are frozen and we are worried about our water supply!
madras auto drivers are real pricks. if you did speak tamil, they would have found another excuse to be nasty. my apologies on my behalf of my city.
did you catch aruna sairam? and a friend of mine performed too in a couple of sabhas. she travels from singapore every year to perform.
i must say waking up and finding someone stare at you (unless it’s your lil child) is creepy!
oh, and can we trade metabolisms?
Thats what A said, but it wasn’t my intention to be creepy, honest! And it was only for a few seconds-he just happened to open his eyes then!
Totally willing to have some of your metabolism!
Didn’t catch AS this time-had been to some concerts of hers recently tho.
No need to apologise on behalf of Chennai. I think people try to avoid these issues because of the car and driver culture-if people got together to improve the public transport, in a way that benefited everyone, the passengers and the drivers maybe things would be different.
Madras Autodrivers!
I can go on and on…
Hey Uttara! It’s nice to know that someone who loves you stares at you
. I guess it could start a staring match! It reminds me of a Chandler and Monica episode in Friends. Great that he is cooking delicious things.
And you are so right about the cabs and autos of Bombay. I am from Delhi, and I know how difficult public transport is in my city.
I don’t know how to appreciate concerts the way you do. You can keenly observe the nuances, and that is a great trait! Sometimes I get impatient, but if the singer is too good, I find myself mesmerised in spite of myself
Best wishes for the work out. I am sure you will enjoy the warmth and agility it will bring in the cold weather.
no need to get bothered with technicalities, your way of listening to music is best!
Hey Uttara! That was a comment by me. Sorry, I forgot to put my name in
Best wishes,
Anjali
I was just moaning about my weight gain over the holidays. Wanna swap?
December season, the music, sabha canteen food – man I miss Madras.
Now the food, that was one thing I could not take advantage of! Had to eat strictly at home!
bummer
Lovely header!
I’m trying to imagine you waking up your spouse with your appreciative stares:)
I heard Saumya in July at a small temple hall, and she was superb. I guess an individual’s performances do vary.
I hope you’ve fully recovered from the bug and are enjoying the huge meals A is cooking for you.
And that the cold and snow aren’t causing you guys too many problems- it sounds quite scary this year.
Thanks Dipali, bug is leaving and have started cooking myself huge meals as well!
Snow is going to remain until end of next week. We aren’t used to it snowing for so long in London!
