Misc nothings
Back from a hectic trip to India (if any of my friends are reading this-I didn’t meet you because a) I was there for a very short time and b) I was in places like Kachchh where you wouldn’t have been).
The hiatus from blogging must continue, sort of, as I must be writing my dissertation.

Wore a pair of microscopic shorts in the house yesterday to combat London’s September heat (!). On returning home, A informed me that they left nothing to the imagination. A compliment or not? Not, I think.

I have had enough of besura and unprepared children belting out Carnatic music on youtube. Adoring parents, please note, they are not “prodigies,” whatever your shruti challenged ears might believe.

Every instrument is lugged along to accompany various singing hopefuls on TV contests, mridangam and tablas, veena and harmonium, but the Tanpura, which should be the backbone of this orchestra, remains too “heavy” to transport. The electronic box is enough for all.

I am really glad to be back to my own space, my own study, my own bathroom, my own kitchen, my own bedroom and my husband. Now to somehow shift of all these to India.

I loved the way u ended it
someone pls shift all this to india
you were in india?!!
Arrey, thought you knew I was there. Was not in your vicinity
. Shall be there in winter, when rest assured I will eat your head!
Do you know a good mover, that can handle humans as well?
good to have you back. I can so relate to the last statement. Now if only someone could find the OH a job there as well, That would be perfect
presenting this little prodigy who is going to make your day bright . Found this video on you tube in 2007 when I was two months pregnant . I was/am so mesmerized by this little precious guy , god decided to give me a boy : ). You will see other related vidoe of him in the list . Enjoy .

I beg my daughter to correct herself when she sings off key. Which is almost everytime she sings
Hey Ra, would you you be visiting Hyderabad by any chance when you come next?
Kachch is like a stone’s throw (okay, a bit more than that) from me. I would have come (okay maybe not, but I would have made sure some of mum’s greasy staff got through to you). I’m properly sulking.
got sun-baked?
looking fwd to it big time!
I had seen him, thanks for reminding me, he does have a lot of talent!
Hey, I think it’s perfectly okay to sing off key, I do it all the time! Ask my music teacher! Just inflicting the child wonders onto the rest of the world singing tough classical pieces while believing they are in key is what I am obejcting to
unlikely
me too
LOLOL @ besura children.Btw this little guy above he comes from a highly talented musical family so I won’t compare him with the other youtube videos. I am sure you’ve seen that Erode Anantharaman kid too. I understand the beaming parent syndrome. But Why Why on earth do adults have a need to parade their own bad-singing that on youtube and they’re not even cute??
On the Tanpura you need to know a few things about the average South Indian concert. I’ve been to a concert where there’s two miraj tanbura each differing with the other slightly in Sruti , the tanpura producing another shade lower/higher and the singer’s sruti varies. So sometimes for an amateur singer I’d rather have a well-tuned srutibox than a cluelessly tuned/strummed tanpura. I know apples != oranges but the point is awareness and fidelity to Sruti takes a conscious and intuitive effort on the performer’s part more so in CM. Oh well The comment became longer than the post ..
the kind that go ‘baby-jee aap to vaisi ki vaisi ho’, even after you’ve put on two stone and look like a snarling beast with a bawling baby.
on an aside, mum tours a lot in kachch: she’s working on girl education there. If you ever needed anything.
Having just returned from a wonderful trip in India myself, I wholeheartedly agree with your last point.
I suppose we are doomed to be forever torn – if only we could live in two places at the same time!
Ra, Sands, want to trade places with me? Sands, I can take your dog also, thankyouverymuch.
Still feeling that way? Any plans to go back to the US? I feel like stealing Sands dog too…
Back from India trip and it does feel good to be back Home
But then, the last sentence … you just said it perfectly !
Why greasy? Can you believe it was cooler than London is now? And there were breezes, and the trees were green? But not too cool-hot enough for sun loving me!
