Thank you, thank you, for this link! This is so beautiful! I wonder, is the venue the Navarathri Mandapam in the Padmanabhapuram Palace?
I have to say, I was initially a bit reluctant to listen to this: I grew up listening to MS Subbulakshmi’s version, and felt that nothing could top that. This one might just nudge itself into position next to MS!
I’ve been using Kuntalavarali as my serotonin fix too, though the song is usually Balamurali’s Tillana. I love this song but only until the Anupallavi. My admittedly biased opinion is that Bhogindra Shayinam suffers from excessive verbiage towards the end. MSS gives the the sprightly girl Kuntalavarali an image of a Stately elephant ambling along temple steps
TY for the link – that’s such a lovely song!!! Sanjay Subrahmanyam’s version is certainly a lot more upbeat than MS’, which was more of a lullaby, as someone has mentioned. I’ve been hearing another beautiful song called Pirava Varum Tharum (by Gopalakrishna Bharathi) often on worldspace, and the voice closely resembles Sanjay Subrahmanyam’s, but thanks to my very limited knowledge on carnatic music, I can’t quite figure out and youtube isn’t of help either…… !
thank you for the link. I am enjoying a beautiful selection of music thanks to you. after the birth of my son , I don’t get much time to sprawl the web to find such selection. thanks you much .
hey thanks! it’s such an upbeat raga. enjoyed sanjay s. version as well.
have you heard anil srinivasan and sikkil gurucharan’s madhirakshi CD — v. intense, slow, no percussion approach to carnatic music. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_d7MUJgEyms
This sure did it for me. I landed here by chance and absolutely loved the song! I can’t seem to stop humming it since the last 3 days! Thanks for leading me to it. It even inspired me to do a post on I wish I’d continued singing!

You’re welcome Kamini.
In my case, I heard this one first and then looked for other versions! The MS version is more relaxed…
The venue is the Kuthiramalika palace-at the other festival organised by Rama Varma-the Swathi Sangeethotsavam.
Thanks Ra. Actually, I did see that the Kuthiramalika Palace was mentioned, after I wrote this. I would love to attend this festival one day.
Love it – it was my kids’ favourite lullaby as babies – the MS version, but yes Sanjay does full justice to it!

Wonderful! You are right.. it is a guaranteed mood lifter. Thank you

Wah! What a metaphor! Have you noticed that elephants while ambly can be quite girly too? And coquettish?
Glad you liked it.
The Sanjay version is more like a wake-up call!
Thanks for that link, Ra.. it’s wonderful. Wish i can attend the festival live someday soon.

He may have-I have versions by MLV and Sudha Raghunathan, but I have a vague feeling he may have sung it too
