People are objecting to the increasing presence of Abhangs in Carnatic music concerts. More on that later. In the meantime, BolAvA viTThala (with some interruptions)
There’s a whole list of reasons, some of which are:
a)They’re not in Tamil
b)They are not Carnatic music and do not fit into a Carantic format
c)Javalis and Padams should be sung instead
d)They’re simply playing to the gallery (i.e. the singers who sing them are doing this)
Oh by the way – since no comments possible on prev post, just thought I’d leave one here to say that I really empathised with what you’d said in the post. Such a pity that religion is such a divisive subject…
Er. The previous comment sounds as though Purandara and others sang in Telugu. What I meant was they sang in a language that was *not* Tamil.
Well some argue that Tamil singers should be doing more to promote Tamil compositions that are being lost and being forgotten, this argument is not on a chauvinistic basis, and those who make it would have room for abhangs as well. Others don’t think there is a place for them in Carnatic concerts.
Really? objecting? why? I like abhangs!

Arrgh! I can’t believe they object to them not being in Tamil! All of Thyagaraja is in Telugu! And Purandara! And nearly everyone else!
It is music for heaven’s sake!

Very interesting. Though a bit different from the abhangas that one is used to I liked this a lot.
Thanks.
