Don't rent or sell to Muslims: Surat Brokers

2008 December 15

On the one hand, Muslims of Surat have been staging protests against the terror attack on Mumbai. On the other, there have been cases of estate brokers in a prime locality coming together to pass a resolution that none of them will either sell or rent out property to Muslims. Their excuse is that terrorists use local help.

“Muslims should stay in their own area. Why should they come into ours. We’ve decided to join hands and ensure that none of us sells or rents out houses to them,” said Shashank Vaidya, a leading broker in Adajan locality.

Arent they tired of this divisiveness? Or is this their way of doing ‘something’ that every person with a passable squeak is talking about? Ridiculous does not begin to define the idiots.

Don’t know some people seem to get their energy-their daily cup of tea from divisive behaviour :(

Much of what is stated in the article, is the unspoken law in other cities of the state such as Ahmedabad. Ghetto-isation of religion is almost complete here, and is now turning to new divisions: meat-eating, vegetarian, single women, couple living-in, etc.
Like several parts of Chennai. And I’m sure there’s an increasing number of Indian cities to add to this.

in chennai, there are builders that sell only to brahmins. and some that sell only to vegetarians!!!!!!!!

I have to say that this has been happening since years, even in cities like Bombay. One of my Hindu friends, who happens to be married to a Muslim, had a very difficult time booking an apartrment. Everytime, she mentioned her husband’s name, it proved to be a stumbling block.
Even in my building (I lived in a predominantly Gujarati locality in Andheri), there is an unwritten rule that Muslims are not allowed to buy a flat. The reason stated is, “We’re not against your religion, but we do have an issue with non-vegetarian food being cooked in the building”. It’s a different matter that Hindus are not asked whether they are non-vegetarians, when they come to book a flat…

    I know. It’s so depressing.

It’s sad actually. Isolation never helps, it only widens the gap. Singapore has a very interesting strategy. Most of the housing is government owned and called HDBs. They ensure that there is an equal distribution of communities in every HDB. So there’ll be a mix of chinese, indians, hindus, muslims, buddhists in every HDB and will not only any one community to dominate thus maintaining communal harmony.

One also needs to understand the frustration of Gujaratis. They are traders and have never really had Kshatriyas amongst their clan. They’ve been ruled by muslim rulers for centuries and that frustration is probably being vent right now.

happens everywhere babe. people like you are few, far between and precious. i think i once wrote abt the time a girl who joined my private hostel was turned away the moment the landlord heard that her name was angela. the rest of us with indian names quietly removed all signs of Christianity from our study tables (Bibles, cross, rosary) and lay low…

Namaste, late comment here but definitely the point can not be over emphasised, the minority problem will get worse if you isolate them. The people are not to be blamed, it is the ideas which motivate them which are responsible for their outcome. And also the religious leaders of various kinds which motivate all sorts of violence.
And when was a broker ever arrested for brokering a flat to a terrorist.
That said and done, I do not think it is wrong at all to object to ideas, like some concepts of Christianity, Hinduism, Islam have long been left to the faithful. I see in religion, the root of many of our problems.

Yes, objecting to ideas is not the same as discrimination.
