In which I get a swelled head…sort of

Recently A and I met up with some colleague-friends of his. I was meeting one of them, N, for the first time. Also present was R.
A: I talked to N on the phone yesterday and she said that you were really bright.
Me: (feeling pleased) Hmmm, really? She was just trying to make you happy.
A: (grinning broadly) No, she mentioned that she thought you were bright to everyone else after we left. And R said you would have to be bright, to keep up with me.
Sigh.
