Channulal Mishra-Krishna
I was feeling rather smug that I had escaped my usual once in two months cough, thinking sympathetically of my blogging pals 30in2005 and SilentOne who had fallen ill. Well, what do you know, I got a sore throat and the time I cough the most is at night, into A’s ear. This has put me in a bad mood(never mind poor Banker A who gets no sleep these days) since it has meant I have to sing less, and if I sing less everything else seems a little more dull than usual. Grumble. But it has meant being able to take it a little easy and do a little listening.
Had been listening to and enjoying Shiv Vivah by Pandit Channulal Mishra (of the Kirana Gharana and of the beautifully hoarse sounding voice)-one must hear his Jai Shiv Shankar Aughar Dani in the Carnatic Raga Hamsadhwani- when a friend S, reminded me he had sung a nice Krishna album, which I hadn’t heard.
Here’s a beautiful one Nand Ghar Baje. from “Krishna”
The sore throat has gone, but I thought I’d post this anyway.
Updated to add: Here is Dipali’s post on Channulal Mishra. She describes his voice perfectly!

Please add my name to the sick list and let me know what you did for this damned cough.
Well – it is not purely classical in the classical sense but MG have you heard Kabir by Abida Parveen ?
It is, very simply put – beautiful !!!
No, it’s not, it falls in the kajri/ hori/ thumri category which is sometimes referred to as “light classical” though Thumris are quite difficult to sing…I have lots of Abida, love her sufi songs…and like the Kabir ones as well.
like your header… Is it the puja you are doing on Diwali? Is that the Buddha or the Krishna at the top of the shrine? I love your arti thali, it is the same as my granny’s…
There is a Buddha and a Krishna…we collected them all in one place for the puja, that’s not where I usually keep my altar. Thanks for liking the thali. I thought I had a nicer one, but I couldn’t find it. Old fashioned steel is nice in it’s own way!
I am curious MG, were you able to read that story, the link to which i had sent some days back, ‘Love, the only true religion’? It is about a dargah in Hyderabad. And two people of different religions as guru and shishya. I wonder how you felt about it.
Channu Lal’s Krishna is the first thing I ever heard by him- and I love it, all of it, especially ‘koi shyam manohar lo re’, which still gives me goose bumps whenever I hear it. Had done a tiny post on him some months ago-here: http://dipalitaneja.blogspot.com/2008/03/chhanulals-magic.html
His rendering of Kabir, especially Amarpur le chalo ho sajna, again in Hamsadhwani, is awesome.
I’m so glad you heard him. I’ll try and get the Shiv Vivah.
Abida’s Kabir is another phenomenon!
Glad your throat is better:)
I loved this piece. Thanks for introducing me to Channu Lal. Had not heard of him before.
MG, is there an online site that you prefer for Hindustani classical music? I would like to go back to listening to that music and was wondering if there is a good site for it.
