Deshakshi
2008 October 10
I came across the Raga Deshakshi for the first time today. It reminded me of the sound of the music that accompanies Odissi. I looked it up and apparently it is a rare raga and used in Kathakali. It is outrageously beautiful, reflective of any activity that can be slow and sensuous, prayer, dancing, making love, bathing. Indeed, for me it is remniscent of one of Renoir’s “After Bathing” Paintings.
In this video Rama Varma, Rajashree and Ratnaprabha sing a rare composition by Swati Tirunal Saraseeruhanabha in Deshakshi.

Lovely! The way the tune started, it reminded me of the Hindi song ‘raat bhar aap ki yaad aati rahi’….not sure if that song is based on this raagam.
Thanks for posting. I love these clips.
Thanks. Sometimes I think posting youtube videos is cheating, but then it’s also a record for me!
ra, nice link. thanks
AFAIK.
Deshakshi takes the same as bilahari but has a sthayi-based existence.
Just like the relationship navroj and kuranji have to Shankarabharana or Nadanamakriya has to mayamalavagauLa. Even if I know how things grammatically work I am simply astounded by how a ragam sounds totally different with just some limits imposed and some boundary conditions established (no sancharas beyond ni etc)
Thanks for the comment, I learn more from you all the time. As for the ragams sounding totally different, I think that’s one of the great things about Indian music.
I cannot wait to get home and listen to this!
