Uncontacted Tribes

2008 May 30

Today the news says that an “uncontacted” tribe in the Amazon forest has been photographed by a Brazilian government aircraft.

Reading that reminded me of Sentinel Island in the Andaman Sea. I think the idea of leaving Sentinel Island alone is a good idea, at least for the time being. The Sentinelese don’t want contact with anyone else, greeting those who try to communicate with them with a shower of arrows. Previous attempts at “contact” with the Sentinelese have produced mixed results and from what I can make out the Indian government has decided to leave them alone since the mid-nineties. Those Andaman tribes, like the Jarawa and the Onge that have had contact with others have suffered a series of problems unknown to them before.
